“The Modern American Frugal Housewife” authored by S0nicfreak
I am not quite sure what I expected from a book released by someone who chooses “S0nicfreak” (complete with a ‘0’ instead of an ‘o’) as the name under which to publish their material… But whatever I was expecting I was still extremely disappointed.
The book marketed itself as a modern, updated, and more helpful spin off of a popular public domain book titled The American Frugal Housewife. For a little background on the original text, it was written in 1828 by one Lydia Maria Child. I myself own a copy of it, and it contains a plethora of information ranging from the practical, financial, and other- all geared to helping you live simply and wholesomely, and save as much money as possible in the process. While some of the information is certainly not relevant to the modern era for many reasons, plenty of the information contained in its 200+ pages is still helpful even today.
This “Modern equivalent”, however, boasts a paltry 12 “tips” and the whole book is only 7 pages long. Completely unsurprisingly, it sells for only $0.99 on Amazon- though I wish I had saved the money as the book isn’t worth a penny, even. These 12 “tips” contained within its 7 pages are woefully lacking in any substance or legitimate information- which is a disgrace given the fact that there are so many things worth being mentioned but weren’t, and several things that were mentioned but which could have been expounded upon in much greater detail. The overall air of the book comes across mildly superior, even… Something I found almost humorous in its sadness.
As outdated as the original text may be in some regards, I feel that if you are going to devote an entire preface (and synopsis) to defacing the originals’ helpfulness, then your book should at least deliver something substantial (preferably something other than almost snidely written variations of common tips found everywhere else already); for all its barking about how outdated The American Frugal Housewife is today, The Modern American Frugal Housewife utterly fails to deliver anything substantial or of legitimate worth.
