Local Adventures I

Even though I grew up here, I cannot honestly say that I have explored much. For some reason, though, moving and becoming a married woman and first time home owner has given me an interesting drive to explore the area around me lately.

The discoveries have actually been quite exciting- especially in the realm of plants.

In my own yard I have found both Golden Tickseed (Coreopsis Tinctoria), Foxtail (Alopecurus), and False Garlic (Nothoscordum bivalve)– whereas in a field not too far away I have found Carolina Larksupr (Delphinium carolinianum), Common Spiderwort (Tradescantia ohiensis), and Yellow Clover (Melilotus officinalis). This week my Husband and I even purchased two plants for our yard- Black Diamond Crepe Myrtle, and a Persian Lilac (Melia azedarach). My own Lilac Bush whose variety I am still unsure of was also finally put in the ground after years living in a pot. We even picked up a slew of Herbs for me, including Purple Basil (Ocimum basilicum purpurescens), Chocolate Mint (mentha x piperita), Sweet Basil (Ocimum basilicum), Hot and Spicy Oregano (O. v. hirtum), Common Garden Sage (Salvia officinalis), Peppermint (Mentha piperita), and Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis).

Cute and Cuddly discoveries have not been lacking, either. With all of the rain, I’ve also discovered whole colonies of common snails along with some of the prettiest Toads I’ve honestly seen in a while- some of which were positively huge!

Of course, with all of the exploring I am rarely getting back by sundown. It has provided me with ample opportunity to see some truly breathtaking sunsets. I am thoroughly convinced that the view from my house will never disappoint me.
